On January 11th, the Mas La Carrera farm, located in Sant Esteve d'en Bas (La Garrotxa), was visited by the students of the second-year students of the High Degree in Livestock and Animal Health. Mas La Carrera is a family company that currently has about 300 meat cows of different breeds, which fattens calves and markets quality beef products with the Natrus brand. Salvador Carrera, he explained to students the evolution and current operation of the company. Mas La Carrera is a pioneer in the introduction of cows of the Angus breed. This breed is recognized for the quality of its meat. In Mas La Carrera they also do agricultural work on the land. The livestock feed is of their own harvest, and in the case of cows it is based on pastures and forages, in addition to summer cows also transhumance in Ripollès to take advantage of mountain pastures. Cows are provident with an individual identification system and the Global Positioning System, GPS, which includes sensors that help the herd’s management. Feeding fattening calves is a "unifeed" type ration with a high fodder base. Mas La Carrera is a sample of a company that evolves, and undertakes improvement projects. On Wednesday, 9 January, the 2o students of CFGM of Gardening visited
BrucJardí in the morning and CORMA in the afternoon. In BrucJardí,
attended us Francesc Caballero, its manager, and Joan Soler, who is a
commercial technic.
During the visit, they showed us the different installations explaining the
diverse materials that exist to build a garden and the current trend.
In the morning, the students were able to see a lot of inert material, while in the afternoon, they could see thousands of plants in CORMA.
Both visits were perfect to get useful information for their student project.
We want to thank Francesc and Joan for their attention and well
treatment towards us. It’s always a pleasure to visit them.
On 11th December, the Mas Bes dairy farm, received the visit of first-year students of High Level of Livestock and Animal Health. Mas Bes is a company that produces cow milk branded ATO Nature. Joan Viñolas, explained the evolution and how the farm operates nowadays, the biogas plant where they produce electricity, and the farm’s visits available to all kind of groups of people interested. The visitors can supplement the experience visiting the historical Farm Museum, seeing the evolution of farmers’ lifestyle, the shop where you can buy several farm’s products, and finally eating in the restaurant farm. Mas Bes is an example of a company open to the public, which evolves, undertakes news projects, and announces products which are the result of their work and values. We, the School, thank the Mas Bes farm, for giving us the opportunity to make this interesting visit.

Last Tuesday, on October the 2nd, twenty second grade students of agricultural production conducted a visit to the Mas Terricabras farm in Oristà. Mas Terricabras is a family business, a diversified livestock farm, which consists of intensive pork production, extensive beef cattle, fattening calves and productions of different cereal crops and fodder crops. Some remarkable aspects of the exploitation are: - The system of heating of the pig farm works with biomass produced in the own operation, and the production of renewable electrical energy with solar photovoltaic panels. - The production and marketing of Forment wheat, wheat used to produce bread of high quality and food value that is marketed directly. - Mas Terricabras has also been a pioneer in producing the “green Orista’s tomato” and the renowned "Cigró d'Oristà", which has a Origin Recognition. The school Quintanes thanks the Rovira Costa family for their kindness and attention, that has given the students the experience of knowing this interesting explotation.
